Gorillaz Demon Days Live Download

A 'trailblazer' event to herald the announcement of the inaugural Manchester International Festival, this live presentation of Gorillaz'.

In the days of the Archies, cartoon bands were simple, the domain of children and the demented. Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz, on the other hand, is more complex than most museum pieces. For those without a Ph.D. in media studies, the project is difficult to fully comprehend, but it seems to involve characters, including Noodle and Murdoc (conceived by comic artist Jamie Hewlett), who play ambient hip-hop with the aid of musicians like Danger Mouse and Bootie Brown (both humans). Implausibly, this all has become a mainstream hit, culminating when Madonna joined the Gorillaz cartoons onstage at the Grammys. (This is not to be confused with the time she sang with two manga caricatures, Britney and Christina, at the MTV awards.)

In a download-crazed era, when a musician’s bank account is nurtured by concerts, even the best cartoon band will encounter a fundamental dilemma. Hence this alluring event, which features an astounding slew of guest musicians (including Ike Turner, Shaun Ryder and De La Soul) joining Albarn to re-create last year’s Demon Days LP. Compared with the radical holographic tour Gorillaz is plotting for next year, the Apollo dates—which mimic a Manchester run this past fall—seem downright old-fashioned.
